The second Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI) conference was themed “The Reimagined Future: Crafting Sustainable Paths for Black Communities”. It was held by Africa Centre in November 2024 and funded by the Government of Canada.
The executive director of Africa Centre, Sam Juru, gave the opening remarks. The founder and managing partner of Reimagine Labs, Liban Abokor, shared his experiences and challenges Black communities faced; he said that creating and changing rules and policies can be powerful.
Nkem Onyegbula of CYNKON Incorporated and Change Management Consultant led the session “Mapping a Sustainable Future,” exploring challenges faced by Black-led non-profits and practical ways to embrace collaboration, manage resources, and build sustainable organizations.
Breakout sessions focused on mental health, financial growth, and building a winning grant portfolio, facilitated by Noreen Sibanda, Laurel Sabur, and Drsane Kaffa.
Engaged delegates gained valuable insights and strategies to strengthen Black-led and Black-serving non-profit organizations across Canada. The two-day conference, with over 170 delegates from all over Canada, offered educational opportunities on sustainability in the non-profit sector and successful funding strategies, empowering African descent communities.
